As the word "data" can be ambiguous, in HealthVault, each atomic item stored in a health record is called a "thing".   Each Thing is associated with a single Thing Type.  In general, you can think of "thing types" as "data types" within HealthVault, and both terms may typically be used interchangeably.  Every Thing Type has an XML schema associated with it.
